'In peace true soldiers are captive lions, fretting in their cages. War gives them their liberty and sends them, like boys bounding out of school, to obtain their heart's desire, or perish in the attempt. Battle is the soldier's vital breath! Peace turns him into a stooping asthmatic. War makes him a whole man again, and gives him the heart, strength, and vigour of a hero.'
C.T. Studd (famous British missionary)

EXCEEDINGLY!

This expansive word, 'exceedingly', is little used these days, but it makes a really powerful impact when used in conjunction with other words. It means, 'over and beyond', 'greater than can be imagined', 'beyond belief'.

For instance:

There are levels of evil, and then there is exceedingly great evil.

There are levels of violence, and then there is exceedingly great violence.

The Bible speaks of people being exceedingly sinful: 'But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly'.  (Genesis 13:13)

In the book of Jonah, it says, 'the men were exceedingly afraid'.  (Jonah 1:10)

This word correctly amplifies the sinfulness, violence, and fear that mankind is capable of, to enable us to comprehend the seriousness and extent of the matter.

Our whole world is beginning to witness the exceedingly great wickedness and deception of the human race, from the governments down to street level.  People are beginning to experience a fear and apprehension that is going to grow exceedingly in the days to come.

Exceedingly troubled times require exceedingly great praying to the One true God who is merciful and gracious, ready to forgive and pardon any who will turn to him in truth: 'night and day praying exceedingly'.  (1Thessalonians 3:10)

However, just like the crowd cried out exceedingly against Jesus two thousand years ago, saying, "Crucify him We will not have this man to reign over us", so the mobs, both religious and secular, still do exactly the same today. (Mark 15:14); (Luke 19:14)

However, whoever will call on the name of the Lord shall be saved and delivered. It is still a valid and unfailing promise from God.

And he will do exceedingly more for you than you might ever think possible!  (Ephesians 3:20)
