'In peace true soldiers are captive lions, fretting in their cages. War gives them their liberty and sends them, like boys bounding out of school, to obtain their heart's desire, or perish in the attempt. Battle is the soldier's vital breath! Peace turns him into a stooping asthmatic. War makes him a whole man again, and gives him the heart, strength, and vigour of a hero.'
C.T. Studd (famous British missionary)

A refuge from the storm

I am currently writing a short book for all those who have any interest in the extraordinary times we live in and what they may mean for this generation. We need answers, and also understanding as to what is happening and how we should prepare for whatever might be round the corner.

People all around are asking questions and looking for some clarity that might give them hope for a better future, and even a reason for pursuing the dreams they once had. It seems that there is no voice anywhere offering a way out of the mess, or some meaning in all of the confusion. You would think that the church leaders might have spoken up and said they knew what was going on and had the answers, but even they are lost in the gloom of fear and mist of uncertainty.

The Archbishop of Canterbury recently urged everyone to conform to the dictates of the government and its medical 'experts' to prove they were decent people. He himself either never understood his calling, or lost his way in the darkness somewhere along the line. He is meant to be a torch-bearer in the darkness, bringing light and hope to a world headed for hell. He is supposed to have the answers to man's dilemmas.

But if the blind are leading the blind, then what should those with even a little sight do? Certainly they should not follow the blind! 'There is a way that seems right unto men, but the end of that way is death.'

However, there is a light still shining in the midst of the storm that beckons to all of us to come and seek its warmth and security. It strikes out across the fields, the mountains, the raging seas, and says, "Come unto me all you who are burdened, anxious, worried, lost and confounded: I will give you rest: rest for your souls, peace in the thundering tempest, calm in the tumult of uncertainty, and joy in the midst of trouble."

It does not point us to some conference or spiritual 'guru'. It does not ask us to become all 'religious'. It does not tell us to conform to all the dictates of the world or of man-made rituals. It says, "Come unto me."

That light is the Rock of all ages, an unmovable mountain that will withstand the hurricane of  troubles and distresses, and never be moved. It is the cave where a soul might hide themselves when life becomes overwhelmed with fear and stress, and where the heat of the light brings healing and assurance to the heart and mind of any traveller who runs to it for shelter. It is a mighty fortress that hosts an army of fearless warriors sent and stationed to defend all the weary and struggling souls who seek a refuge from the onslaught of the devil.

It is Jesus, the light of the world, who beckons us to run to him. He alone is all we need. He alone is sufficient to take care of every situation that compasses our souls at times. You only have to call his name, and run to his side. There is no Goliath, no evil, no fear that can overcome him. In him you have a stronghold, and he has a strong hold on your life.

He says, "Stand by my side and behold the confusion of the people. Watch my plan at work and see my purposes unfold. The earth is mine and all that is in it belongs to me, both the people, and every creature in every place. I made it all for my glory, and I shall bring it to an end. I hold all things together with the word of my power, and a sparrow does not fall from the housetop without me being there.

I know the hairs on your head by number, and I hold you in the palm of my hands. None can snatch you from me, nor take away that which I purposed for your life. I have loved you with an everlasting love, and I called you from before the beginning of time to be my child.

The storm shall not conquer or defeat you, for I have made you more than a conqueror through my strength; and in my authority you can tear down the strongholds of defiance and opposition, and tell the mountains of impossibility to be removed and be cast into the sea.

I am with you always, even unto the end of the earth.

I have prepared an amazing place for you in heaven; and soon, and very soon, the heavens shall part, and you, along with all of my people, shall be redeemed and live forever in wonder and joy in my presence. All sorrow and tears shall be wiped away. There shall be no more pain, neither suffering, neither sadness or death, for the former things as you have known them shall be gone forever, for I make all things new."

"Come unto me, and I shall give you rest."
